The Black Diamond Camalot X4 is the eagerly awaited micro-cam range from Black Diamond which combines the narrow head and small size of the Camalot C3s, with the larger expansion range and 4 cam design of the classic Camalot C4s. With their concise array of features the X4s could become the go-to choice amongst small rock climbing cams.
The Camalot X4 comes in 6 sizes; the largest 4 sizes corresponding to the smallest 4 sizes of Camalot C4 (the colour coding is also the same). The X4s however have the advantage of a considerably narrower head, for better placements in pockets, and a very flexible stem in all directions (very similar to that of the legendary CCH Alien). For anybody climbing marginally protected routes the X4s are certainly an improvement over the C4s and the extra cost will be justified by the greater number of gear placements available.
The largest 3 sizes of Black Diamond Camalot X4 have the same tried and tested double axle design as the Camalot C4s, whilst the smallest 3 sizes have an innovative new offset axle design. This produces the same increased expansion range as the double axle design in the small cams, where there is simply not room for 2 axles. The downside is that there is no passive ‘cam stop’ effect.
