Calling bullshit on the claim for hydrophobic down

There's marketing hype, and then there's Thermarest's claim that "900-fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down : Stays drier and maintains loft 60 times longer than untreated down."

This is unmitigated bullshit. The premium makers like Western Mountaineering, PHD, Valandre, Feathered Friends etc are all using untreated down exclusively. This is because they have found through experience that the new treated downs don't offer any practical benefit in the field and may reduce the loft in the long-term. So it's likely slightly worse than conventional down, unless you are planning to go swimming with it...

That doesn't make this bag a bad purchase - it's great to see an ultralight offering from a mainstream brand. Just don't believe the marketing hype about the down.
