Retro and futuristic design combine perfectly in the in the rebooted Five Tennie from Five Ten.
Back in the mid-80s, Charles Cole, founder of the rock climbing shoe company Five Ten, launched the brand by essentially inventing the approach-shoe category. It began with the (almost) eponymous Five Tennie, which Cole made by sticking an ultra grippy climbing rubber sole to the base of a tennis-shoe. The design quickly became a cult favourite - bridging the gap between climbing and hiking footwear.
Cole went on to develop Stealth, Five Ten’s trademark, über-sticky climbing-shoe rubber on which he built the legendary brand. Over time the Five Tennie became more technical in its design but ultimately dropped out of production in the late eighties, replaced by the Guide Tennie and others. Resurrected as of 2019, this seminal shoe is back.
This latest Five Tennie includes a number of contemporary twists, some courtesy of new brand owner Adidas. Most of Five Ten’s recent approach shoes featured simple circular traction lugs, however those on the rebooted Five Tennie are notched, running widthwise across the outsole to provide improved traction when scrambling uphill on rock and scree.
Perhaps the best feature is the modern gusseted tongue. This is attached to the inside of the leather upper, forming a sock-like construction to prevent debris from entering the shoe - ideal for wading through heather! The inside of the upper is super soft; perfect for slipping on between climbs with or without socks. Size wise the shoes run reasonably generous and do stretch out a little with use. We recommend going for your regular shoe size or maybe half a size down if you are at the small end of a given size.
