Grivel Air Tech New Matic Crampon

9   |

The Grivel Air Tech Crampon New Matic is an excellent modern crampon that neatly fills the gap between ‘walking’ crampons such as the G10, and climbing crampons such as the G12. The New Matic version of the Air Tech features a rear heel bail and plastic front basket, ideal for use with medium stiffness boots.

Although the Air Tech has 12 points they are relatively short, making it both lighter, and easier to walk in than the likes of the G12. The short points also provide a stable base on rock and make it popular for modern mixed (snowed up rock) climbing. The only real weakness is on steep ice, where vertically aligned front points, and longer secondary points (such as on the G14) are preferable. Apart from this the Air Tech is a great all-rounder that will be ideal for a wide range of uses.

* For small boots flip the extension bars over so that the protruding catch shortens the length of the bar.

    Grivel air tech

The Grivel air tech crampon is an excellent design except the upper size of 46 is an over exaggeration, I can't make these crampons fit any of my 45/46 boots particularly ski touring boots. So beware.

    Good price. Good crampons

Good crampons. Easy to adjust and fit well on Scarpa Mantras. Used 3 times on rock ice and snow grade 1 with no issues. More than good enough for my needs.

Excellent good value crampon but the shorter points might not suit all.

I was looking for a light weight crampon to replace my decidedly old school neoprene strapped Stubai ones with a fit that didn't work with modern light weight alpine boots. Were Galibier boots really that large? On the whole very pleased with them, I like the smaller points, easier on the feet and feel more secure on rock placements than might with longer points, BUT on deeper wet snow in the alpine afternoon the shortness becomes apparent with insufficient bite to give as much security as one might like on some slopes. For me, the saving of weight on my ageing legs and the slightly better feel on rock, is worth the need to take greater care on some slopes than one might with the G12s or other rather longer point crampons, and worth the compromise, but others might be happier with G12s.
