The La Sportiva G5 Evo is a very warm and lightweight technical mountaineering boot for ice climbing and mountaineering up to 5500-6000m.

Let's have a look at the technology and features of the the G5 Evo, starting with the Boa Lacing System. This is the wheel that can be turned to tighten the internal wire laces and then locked into place, providing a secure and comfortable fit. The Boa on the G5 Evo tightens the lower part of the boot and there is hook and loop closure for the top part. The Boa control wheel being external is a great feature as it gives the option to tighten and loosen the fit as and when needed, say moving onto more technical terrain where a closer fit is preferred. The Boa Lacing System has been designed to be easy to use when wearing gloves, with its grippy edges and decent size.

Looking at the gaiter next. The outer gaiter is made from water-repellent stretch Cordura® and an internal water-repellent gusset that goes half way up the lace system. This is all pieced to together using Ultrasonic Welding rather than using tradition stitching. This makes the boot lighter, more comfortable with smoother surfaces and also more durable.

The inner shell consists of 4 layers to provide the insulation, consisting of water-repellent Cordura®, felt insulation, polyethylene insulating barrier and a layer of Gore-Tex® INFINIUM™ THERMIUM™. This Gore-Tex® layer offers an ideal thermal balance which keeps feet warm even in very cold conditions and its performance is consistent in both dry and wet conditions.

Onto the insoles, midsoles and soles. You are provided with a thermal insole and the footbed consists of HoneyComb 3 mm insulating carbon more Gore-Tex® INFINIUM™ THERMIUM™ for extra warmth and insulation. The midsole provides the stiffness and crampon attachment points. The sole is made from Vibram® Matterhorn, which is a bit harder than normal but is designed to maintain performance at low temperatures. The lug configuration is the Impact Brake System, common across many footwear models from La Sportiva. This is where the lug arrangement allows for maximum impact absorption, whilst retaining enough edges to assist braking.

These are all great features and the previous model was a great success. For those looking at the G5 Evo from the previous G5 you will be pleased to see some of the issues addressed, with what has already been described, such as having the external Boa Lacing System, which no longer puts stress on the external gaiter and a weaker wear point. Plus there is the addition of an internal water resistant gusset. You are probably still going to get wet feet in wet snow and river crossings, but not as bad as the previous G5 and with the new Gore-Tex® technology your feet will still be warmer in these cases.

Overall, apart from being careful about waterproofness in wet conditions, this is a fabulous boot that ticks the box for multiple styles of winter climbing and mountaineering activities. Which is impressive for such a lightweight and warm mountain boot.
