The rate of descent is controlled by varying the grip on the free end of the rope.
Ascending the rope is possible without changing the position of the STOP by adding a footloop and a handled rope clamp / grab.

While descending with the STOP - braking is done with the brake hand on the free end of the rope, just as with any other descending device. The handle is not the brake and the person rappelling must be completely aware of this fact. As with any other rappelling device, its use requires care and proper training.
