I’ve yet to use the jacket in anger, though have worn it in wind and rain and its lovely. Really comfortable and kept me dry during an hour’s fairly heavy rain. My only niggles are cold spots around the wrist when not using the thumb loops (fine when you do) and the hood doesn’t roll away particularly tidily or comfortably (perfect when up though). Overall a great jacket and would recommend.
Having only used the Alpha Direct on one rainy weekend in the Lakes (it didn't arrive in time for my Cairngorms trip, which would perhaps have tested it more thoroughly) mostly as a warm layer while kicking about the summits I can't really review the claimed breathability/on the move performance. That said, it fits well, is extremely warm for the weight and first impressions tend to suggest that it will be a go-to jacket for autumn and winter. One tiny gripe, the lack of adjustment/cinch on the hood was a bit of a pain in high winds, when the hood tended to catch a lot of it. Might not be so brilliant in driven snow. Still a pretty darn good mid to outer layer for cooler conditions.
Quality jacket though the Large is a little on the snug side around the shoulders, I'm not that bit....5'10'' and about 11.5 stone so was glad that I'd also ordered the XL to compare the sizes...not yet given it a thorough testing in the hills but it seems that it'll be a very warm jacket.
