Wild Country Variable Controller

19 reviews   |

The Wild Country Variable Controller or VC is a super popular, climbing belay device.

Standing the test of time this cost effective belay plate has been around for some time, with only minor changes to the slot widths. The defining feature of the VC is its wedge shape which enables you to use it in two different orientations, with one providing more friction and the other being slicker. This means that you can adjust the braking effects depending on whether you are belaying or abseiling and on different climbing rope diameters.

The Variable Controller is best suited for ropes from 8.5mm to 11mm in diameter, so if you tend to climb on super skinny ropes then an alternative belay device would be recommended.

Good for the price!

An excellent device for the money. Versatile as to rope size and easy to use for beginners. The only criticism is that it can be a little jerky on lower with certain ropes, especially older/fatter/stiffer ropes. A minor issue compared to the price/performance point.
