The Salewa Ortles Couloir is a seriously capable double boot for technical alpine climbing, ice and mixed routes where every gram counts. Challenging the conventional design of a mountaineering boot, the Salewa Ortles Couloir brings together a rigid carbon fibre frame, warm waterproof inner boot and protective external gaiter in a remarkably lightweight package, developed with mountain guides and professional climbers for moving fast when the terrain gets steep.
The carbon fibre construction gives the boot a solid, responsive feel underfoot, with the upper frame reinforced with Kevlar® and PU around the shin. A carbon fibre Ankle Protector System (APS) is built into the design, using a hinged connection to allow the ankle to move naturally while walking without sacrificing support when climbing. The rigid frame, reinforced toe and heel and full PU rand also give plenty of protection when moving through rocky terrain or climbing in crampons.
Inside, the Ortles Couloir is built for cold, wet conditions. The double-boot construction combines a waterproof, breathable membrane with a tough, insulated inner boot, while the external stretch nylon gaiter helps keep snow and ice out. A water-resistant YKK® zip and silicone grip around the gaiter cuff keep everything securely sealed, while additional insulation and Cold Shield technology around the toes provide extra warmth where it matters most.
Underneath, a Vibram® Litebase outsole keeps the weight down while providing dependable grip across mixed ground, ice and glacial terrain. The tread incorporates a climbing zone at the toe, traction grooves and aggressive lugs, with a dedicated heel zone for controlled braking on steep descents. A lightweight carbon fibre shank beneath the foot provides the rigidity and load transfer required for front-pointing, while its variable thickness allows the boot to retain a useful degree of flexibility when walking.
At 725g per boot, the Ortles Couloir sits in an impressive sweet spot between technical performance and low weight. It's a boot for moving quickly through serious terrain, from glacial approaches and alpine faces to steep ice and mixed climbing, without carrying more footwear than the route demands.
