Taking the tried and tested brilliance of the original Camalot, through the use of lighter materials and strategic design improvements, the Black Diamond Camalot Ultralight cam range allow you to shave weight off your rack without compromising thew overall strength. The sculpted cam lobes and dyneema cord replace the original cable, making up the the most notable weight saving alterations. As with the original units, a double-axle design allows for the widest placement range possible for each cam device and colour coding makes for easy identification when quick protection is paramount. When light is right, these cams are an essential.

This is an excellent cam, does everything a cam should but the light weight components make it slightly difficult to handle. Because the stem and sling don’t balance the weight of the head in the same way as a regular C4 it can be difficult to orientate when placing. It feels unbalanced in the hand. This is probably just something I will get used to through continued use and doesn’t really bother me. Another slight drawback I noticed was that (probably due to tighter manufacturing tolerances with lighter components) this cam has a tendency to ‘gum up’ and get a bit sticky. Also it appears to be a bit more prone to corrosion on the bits of exposed steel than other cams I own. I bought this cam before a two week sea cliff climbing trip and took it round the north coast of Scotland along with a set of Dmm dragons, some totems, a couple of BD x4s and z4s. After two weeks of the sea air and odd bit of spray, the ultralight c4 definitely showed some ill effects that the other cams did not. It got sticky and has some obvious surface rust in the ends of the axles and a couple of other small areas. Having given it a bath and a scrub and some lube in all the right places it’s now totally fine, however it’s a bit more of a delicate flower than other cams I own. Worth it for the light weight on the rack which is incredible.
