We’ve just taken delivery of the latest approach shoe from Scarpa, the evolution of the Crux, the Crux 2.
The UK first received the classic Crux back in 2012 and it is now on it’s fourth iteration. It’s always been known as a great all rounder, a good balance of technical performance on scrambles, via ferrata and lower grade rock climbs whilst being forgiving and comfortable enough for those longer walk ins, fortunately it looks like the Crux 2 is no exception.
Scarpa have been careful to retain the essence of Cruxes of old and offer up some improvements and changes for the modern day outdoor enthusiast.
What has been retained?
- Breathable mesh tongue - Additional loop for helping you get them on or an alternate clipping position on the harness or rucksack
- Suede upper for weather resistance, durability and breathability
- Vibram Megagrip sole with dedicated climb zone for confidence on technical and varied terrain
- Still on Scarpa’s BN last, so the shape has stayed the same although we find it a touch roomier/higher volume in the front than the previous generation. For those who haven’t tried a Crux before I would say it’s neither super wide or super narrow, so those on the extremes might struggle to fit it well.
- The Crux 2 like most of Scarpa’s footwear comes in a women’s specific or lower volume fit which we find is usually a little narrower at the heel and top of the foot alongside a lower volume and is usually in a smaller size run.
- Scarpa build quality and manufacturers warranty
Changes
- Shaved off just over 100g per pair
- New lacing system - Still very far down to the forefoot but the laces are a little more asymmetric and easier to adjust with a chunkier lace.
- Toe rand has been designed to be more durable for this iteration
- New colours - The most important part
Our recommendation
For us we’d be recommending the standard version for it’s great balance of weather proofing (for a shoe) and breathability. You might get wet feet in a long stint of rain but they’ll be able to dry out and be ready for the next adventure the day after. Let’s be honest, you’ll probably be in boots if you’re going out in grim conditions.
Share your thoughts!
So what are your thoughts? Are you a fan of the new Crux or should it have stayed the same as it was back in the depths of 2012 oh so long ago?
