I bought these boots and used them once on a winter route. The rubber toe cap split immediately on one boot. Rock and Run declined to process a warranty claim despite their age stating a sharp edge had caused the issue. I dont disagree with this but an incredibly disappointing response considering the sport involves climbing on rock and ice with crampons. A B3 mountain boot should be more durable when brand new and costing £300. R+R even insinuated it could have been caused by an axe which was bizarre and I can only assume they were clutching at straws. They ignored all my reasoning for a claim and primary focus was to look for reasons not to proceed. Did not even provide any advice on repair or other options.
Won't be buying any more Mammut boots and certainly wont be using R+R again. Will be ensuring I mention this experience to all climbing partners moving forward and would stick to local companies despite paying slightly extra as much more helpful with any issues.
We’re really sorry to read how disappointed you are, especially after such limited use. We completely understand how frustrating it must be when a product doesn’t meet expectations in the field.
After assessing the boots, we acknowledged that the damage was caused by a sharp edge (which you agreed with). While we appreciate your point that winter climbing naturally involves contact with rock and ice, it’s important to clarify that manufacturer warranties cover defects in materials or workmanship, rather than damage caused during use, however early that may occur.
Although the boots are designed for technical winter use, it isn’t built to withstand direct impacts such as being stood on with crampons or pierced by an ice axe. Unfortunately, this type of damage is considered accidental and falls outside of warranty coverage. Our comments regarding possible causes weren’t intended to dismiss your experience, but to explain how this kind of damage can occur in use.
We do genuinely regret that this has left you feeling let down by both the product and our response. That’s certainly not the experience we aim to provide. However, on this occasion, the issue is a result of misuse and not a warranty defect.
All the best,
