Fresh for this spring/summer season is a brand new range of revised and improved rucksack models from German powerhouse, Deuter. Having been in the game for 125 years, Deuter know their way around the pack market but, with an evolving clientele and ever changing mountain pursuits, this is the most radical range update and redesign we've seen from Deuter in some time. Fast and light is the name of the game for this year's range and both the new and improved models come with this ethos at the heart of their design, complimenting the Deuter packs we already stock. Perfect for intense missions in the mountains, a real highlight of the Spring range actually comes from the new waterproof additions to the Deuter collection with the Vertrail and Durascent packs, but more on these later.

Guide Range

A stalwart at the heart of the Deuter range, the Guide packs are the foundation of
practically. Crucially, the Guide collection is lighter than ever before thanks to the integration of the Delrin® U-frame, a lighter, plastic-based back system found on models like the Freerider, replacing the aluminium frame
supports found on the previous iterations. This isn't to the detriment of comfort or stability, however, with the trusty Alpine back system providing the perfect balance between light weight, comfort and functionality for every pack in the Guide range.
On the face of the pack, each version of the Guide has received a facelift with vibrant new colourways. For the larger 32+8 SL, 34+8 and 44+8 models, the main compartment access has been updated to feature a J-shaped zip on the front of the pack, complimenting the larger, detachable lid covered synch-close opening at the top of the pack - perfect for reaching items up and down these longer models without having to unload everything out of the top. The smaller models in the range (the 24, 28 SL and 30) feature a lighter flap at the top of the bag, making access easier and quicker on shorter, faster missions whilst the front of the pack sports two smaller zipper pockets for your on-the-go essentials. Needless to say, both the smaller and larger variants of the Guide are equipped with all the necessary attachment points for ropes, helmets and ice axes as well as side compression straps for walking poles and camping kit.
Lighter, brighter and more functional than ever before, this SS23 update for the Guide packs is a welcome one. From summer days out hiking and cragging to alpine climbing and winter mountaineering, the Guide packs can tackle just about everything the mountains could throw at you across the various sizes on offer. Shortrail Range

An exciting new addition to our pack range is the new Deuter Shortrail series, a collection of waist packs in sizes ranging from 1-3 Litres. Perfect for trail running, biking and fast packing, the Shortrail series is perhaps Deuter's purest embodiment of the fast and light style with a sleek design and seamless integration into any high output activity. Made from 100% recycled materials with 100% environmentally friendly production methods, every Shortrail model is Bluesign approved, climate neutral and PFC free.
In an aim to keep the Shortrail as light as possible, the waist belt on every model is trim-to-fit which allows you to customise the fit and trim away any excess material on the waist belt. This vastly reduces bulk, weight and the need for lots of extra useless buckles which is a definite win in our book.
The larger II and III models are fully functional bum bags with a zippered main compartment and various smaller side pockets for essentials like car keys. The II features a reinforced bottle holder for drinking on the go whilst the larger III model has a trekking pole attachment feature for your toughest days out. The smallest Shortrail I model is for the minimalists, coming in as the lightest version with a small key pocket, removable slide-in phone pocket as well as a soft flask holder. Every model of the Shortrail looks perfect for running in our local fells and we can't wait to get one out in the mountains.
Waterproof Range
Our favourite addition to the SS23 Deuter range is undoubtedly the new waterproof pack range - they're absolutely bomb proof. Coming from the mountaineering series of Deuter packs, the Durascent and Vertrail share much of the same DNA. Chief among which is the 220D TPU fabric which has been tested extensively under realistic conditions: 'In a ten-meter-tall rain tower, stormy weather conditions were simulated for two hours straight, with “rain” literally dumping on the packs at a rate of 450 l/m²/h.' according to Deuter. Of course, neither model let a drop of water inside thanks to this fabric and both feature taped and welded seams and TPU-coated zippers to further protect your pack’s contents.
The similarities don't end here. Both packs feature a roll top closure and come fitted with the necessary exterior attachment points for ice axes, helmet, rope and crampons. Inside the pack it's the same story with a generous opening and a zippered inner pocket for storing valuables like keys and mobile phones.
The real differences come in size and carrying system, and this is where the packs fit diverging ends of the mountaineering market. The Durascent, at 30 litres, is the perfect day pack for alpine adventures, scraping up gullies and climbing or walking in the wettest conditions. Big enough to carry a rack and all the tools you need to climb on ice as well as plenty enough room to carry everything you'd want for a long, inclement hike in the hills. Featuring the same Alpine padded back system found on the Guide series, the Durascent is super comfy over longer walk ins whilst, crucially, being ergonomic and efficient when moving on climbs and scrambles.
The Vertrail comes in as the leaner sibling of the Durascent sharing many of the same important features and details but at almost half the size. The key feature of the Vertrail is its running vest-style carrying system which fits seamlessly and comfortably to the back thanks to Deuter's Lite back system. With wider, lighter straps and a multitude of storage options, everything you need on the go can be stored in these pockets with holders for trekking poles, soft flasks and a zipper pocket for your mobile phone or snacks. Although seemingly perfect for quick alpine missions, realistically we think the Vertrail will suit the UK market as a long distance running pack or quick hike pack with enough waterproof storage for emergency backup kit and easy access to your essentials.
