The Grivel Nepal SA is a straightforward mountaineering ice axe with leash that is best used as a steadying tool and safety aid over non-technical terrain and for glacier crossings.
Whilst quite a simple axe in the grand scheme of things, there are some features worth pointing out. The axe the shaft has a very mild curve to aid you when performing a self-arrest by slightly altering the angle and weight distribution, enabling an easy and secure self-arrest. The curve is so slight that there is no interference when plunging the axe into snow and on slopes, when used as a walking aid. The materials are pretty standard. The axe head has a durable forged steel blade and an aluminium shaft, so you will have many years of reliable use.
If you are looking for an entry level mountaineering axe where you do not need anything too technical, the Nepal SA Plus would be an ideal candidate.
