Edelrid Mega Jul II

The Edelrid Mega Jul II is a durable and versatile, stainless steel belay device, with an auto-locking capability that makes it suitable for all types of climbing.

Combining features from a number of other belay devices, the Edelrid Mega Jul offers one fairly unique package. The 2-rope capacity, low weight and guide mode will make it of interest to trad climbers, whilst the auto-locking function, which reduces the chance of a belayer dropping a leader in the event of a fall and makes it easier to lock off a leader if they are working a route, will appeal to sport and wall climbers. An auto-locking, guide mode belay device!

Mega Jul II

I've used a Mega Jul for 10 years now. It can be an irritating device because it wants to lock up rather than pay out smoothly. This is perfect for someone who always has their phone out wanting to take photos or vids whilst holding the rope. Not so good for leaders expecting a smooth pay out of rope every time. It can be used smoothly, but requires the user to have their thumb in the wire loop to pull the device away from the belay crab.
For abbing I don't back up with a prussik any more. The Mega Jul will lock on the rope, requiring you to pull on the loop to descend or if you have a small crab it can be inserted into a hole to provide leverage to release the rope whilst abbing.
By now, if you're still reading, you perhaps haven't written it off as too much faff. My original Mega Jul cable snapped while abbing. This could be problematic if you don't have a small crab to release it , which brings me on to the Mega Jul II, which appears to be redesigned to strengthen the insert area that snapped. The downside is that the plastic cable retainer slips, so I need to glue it in place. Next job lined up!
