Avalanche probes are long rods that are used in emergency avalanche situations to poke beneath the snow to find those that are buried. They are used in conjunction with shovels in rescue operations.

Avalanche probes are a vital piece of alpine equipment and it would be wise to have one with you whilst skiing or venturing into the mountains.
