Ice screws are threaded screws which are placed in the ice by climbers as they ascend ice or mixed climbing routes. Used as protection and at belays as anchor points, ice screws are used to hold the climber in case of a fall and to keep them attached to the ice when stationed at the belay. They are used by mountaineers during alpine climbing and rescue teams also have them as part of their arsenal in the event of a mountain rescue operation.
