The Munros Pocket Mountains

The Munros: A Walkhighlands Guide is a really well produced guide to the Munros, by Pocket Mountains. Though it's hard to call this a pocket guide, the page area is fairly small but has 672 pages, so is still fairly substantial.

The guide is broken down into chapters of areas, such as Fort William. Then the routes are described, whether for individual summits, or for chaining a few together. The descriptions are well written with the expected terrain types, time and height gain etc. Plus there are plenty of photographs of the mountains for inspiration.

There are a lot of Munro guidebooks out there, and this is certainly one of the better ones, and is more of a reference book than a coffee table book. It would certainly be a good choice for your first guide to the Munros.

What the back cover says.
The Munros are mountains in Scotland with a height of over 3000ft and take their name from the first list of such hills published in 1891 by Victorian mountaineer Sir Hugh Munro, 4th Baronet of Lindertis. Revised several times in the years since, most recently in 2012, the official list now features 282 peaks.

This guide is for anyone who wants to climb these mountains and aims to provide reliable routes and tips for ascending them safely. The Munros will ensure you reach parts of Scotland you might otherwise overlook, spend memorable evenings in pubs, bothies and wild camps, and have encounters with other walkers, locals and wildlife that enhance the adventure regardless of whether you get to the top of one Munro or all of them.

Compact and Authoritative

This is an authoritative, engaging and compact collection of routes covering all of the Munros. Clear writing and maps, with plenty of appetising photos. This book is harder to find thesedays. I already have one copy for my backpack and wanted another clean copy to keep at home.
