Grivel Air Tech Evo is perfect for any kind of mountaineering. Its steel blade is forged as one piece, making it lightweight, balanced and reliable. Grivel Air Tech EVO crampons can be treated as an all-rounder, falling somewhere between a classical 10 point walking crampon and a 12 point mountaineering crampon. This makes them most suitable to winter walking, ridges and for easier gullies.
It is easiest to compare them to 12 point mountaineering crampons, such as the Grivel G12, to see where the differences lie. The differences are all in the spikes, they are shorter and the secondary points are less aggressively angled. This means that whilst you lose out on steeper harder climbing, you have gained a lot of stability when walking. The shorter spikes also mean less weight which is a bonus.
The webbing and bindings on the Air Tech EVO have been improved over the previous generation, now using 12mm webbing compared to 14mm. The buckle has been improved and is now easier to tighten and loosen, the extra webbing now fastens in towards the boot and wraps around the front of the ankle and can be tucked into the back. The step-in bindings have also been improved and simplified and is now lighter, stronger and easier to adjust.
The Grivel Air Tech EVO fills a gap where you need a bit more than a walking crampon, without entering the realm of a true climbing crampon. Therefore the Air Tech EVO makes for a great choice if you are predominately walking and covering easier climbs.
