The La Sportiva G2 Evo is an exceptionally high quality insulated double boot, most suited to high altitude mountaineering in the 6000m and 7000m altitudes or at equivalent low temperatures.
There are a lot of important features to cover with the G2 Evo, so let's take a look from the inside out, starting with the inner boot.
The inner boot provides insulation and comfort and is adjustable with a double hook and loop closure. This inner boot is removable and has a grippy base so it can be used in your tent or shelter for both walking around in and for sleeping in.
The inner shell consists of 4 layers to provide the insulation, consisting of water-repellent Cordura®, felt insulation, polyethylene insulating barrier and an aluminium layer to reflect back heat from your foot.
The outer gaiter is made from more water-repellent stretch Cordura® and an internal water-repellent gusset that goes half way up the lace system. This is all pieced to together using Ultrasonic Welding rather than using tradition stitching. This makes the boot lighter, more comfortable with smoother surfaces and also more durable.
Onto the insoles, midsoles and soles. The insole consists of insulating carbon in a honeycomb structure. The midsole provides the stiffness and crampon attachment points. The sole is made from Vibram® Matterhorn, which is a bit harder than normal but is designed to maintain performance at low temperatures. The lug configuration is the Impact Brake System, common across many footwear models from La Sportiva. This is where the lug arrangement allows for maximum impact absorption, whilst retaining enough edges to assist braking.
Then last but not least, the Boa Lacing System. For tightening and for on the go adjustments the G2 Evo uses two Boa lacing systems. One inside the gaiter for adjusting the upper part of the boot, and an external Boa lacing system for adjusting the lower part of the boot. Having an external adjustment on the outside is a great feature, it gives the option to tighten and loosen the fit as and when needed, say moving onto more technical terrain where a closer fit is preferred. The Boa system consists of a wheel that can be pulled in and out to lock and is turned to tighten the wire laces. The Boa Lacing System has been designed to be easy to use when wearing gloves, with its grippy edges and decent size.
Our closing remarks are that the La Sportiva G2 Evo is a great addition to our 6000m and 7000m mountaineering boot range, being well made, having great features and still remaining lightweight. All this makes for a boot that we would be happy to recommend.
