Ascenders are climbing devices used by rock climbers and cavers to mechanically move up a fixed rope. Also called jumars, (named after a popular ascending device), they are often used during the ascent of multi pitch aid climbs, such as the big wall climbing offered in Yosemite, and they are also used to haul sacks up a climb.
The clever mechanism in ascending devices only allows the rope to travel in one direction and is usually in the form of a spring-loaded cam with teeth. The teeth bite onto the rope and grip it to prevent it from moving in the opposite direction so you can move up the rope.
Climbing ascenders are available in several different styles ranging from a basic design for occasional use, to handled ascenders designed for multiple, all day use. If you need any help in choosing the right device for your climbing and safety, please give us a call and we'd be happy to help.
