Climbing pulleys are an advanced piece of rock climbing gear, generally used for hauling gear when big wall climbing, to protect the leader from being pulled off the wall when a second falls when simul-climbing, or used when climbing solo and needing a self belay. They can also be used in rescue situations and are usually part of crevasse rescue kits.

There are simple pulleys and auto-locking pulleys to choose from, the main difference between the two being that the auto locking pulley will bite the rope when weighted so you don't have to hold the weight. This is particularly helpful when hauling and also simul-climbing.
