Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool

2   |

The classic Black Diamond Viper ice axe has been given a significant redesign to produce this overhauled model. In-line with offerings from other manufacturers, it is now a sleeker, lighter, and better balanced tool.

The shaft has a new hydroformed shape to reduce weight whilst maintaining good lateral stiffness (and strength!). The head unit has also been significantly pared down, again to reduce weight and bulk.

The upper grip rest is moveable, and has clearly borrowed the excellent 'Flicklock' design from BD's trekking poles. The rest can now be moved higher or lower up the shaft to alter the secondary grip position depending on the user's preference.

As an all-round ice axe the Viper is hard to beat. It has loads of clearance and a great swing for pure ice routes, whilst still being robust enough for Scottish mixed. It now comes fitted with the T-rated Titan pick as standard, which is definitely a good thing for UK users!

Usage: Vertical Ice, Mixed & Alpine
Modular: Supplied with micro adze, or micro hammer.
Pick: Titan (T-Rated)
Moveable grip rest
Android Leash attachment point
Tool-less pick replacement

NB: Due to the re-designed head unit this tool does not accept the adze/ hammer units from previous Black Diamond tools. The pick fitting is however the same and these are transferable.

Great axes

Having previously used a pair of Stubai Hornets and DMM Xenos, I bought these two years ago. I have mainly used these axes for Scottish winter climbing. The axes are superb for leashless climbing, for security I have been using the Grivel spring leashes

Nice

I've had these axes for a season now, having previously used DMM fly's, so I can't compare them to other leashless axes- but I can say they're amazing! Well designed, curvy enough to give good clearance, but still plungable in cornices etc (Obviusly to a
