The Grivel Tech Machine Ice Axe is a technical, leashless ice tool that's ideal for use on hard Scottish mixed, alpine or steep ice climbing.
A heavily bent shaft gives superb clearance for hooking over bulges and ice cauliflowers, making the Tech Machine ideally suited to steep ice, mixed and dry tooling. A notable feature when compared to some of Grivel's older tools is its relatively low weight, and at only 630g a piece it is only slightly heavier than the Petzl Nomic, and is significantly lighter than the comparable DMM or Black Diamond tools. Not surprisingly given its similar geometry and weight, the swing of the tool feels quite like that of the Nomic.
The handle is composed of a dual density vibration dampening plastic. The clip in point at the head of the axe is sized and will comfortably accept a couple of carabiners. The Tech Machine comes equipped with Grivel's well regarded T rated Machine Ice pick, which is well suited to all round use. A thicker 'Machine Mix' pick is also available for more dedicated mixed and dry tooling use.
