Building on the success of the hugely popular Drago and Furia models Scarpa extend their series of high-end PCB-Tensioned rock shoes with the Chimera, arguably the most advanced rock shoe ever made.
Built on the same last as the Drago, the Scarpa Chimera differs by way of its more balanced design brief, which has created a shoe where sensitivity, support, power and usability hang in perfect equilibrium. Similarly sensitive to the Drago, the Chimera also boasts increased edging prowess thanks to a TPS plastic midsole insert (rather than the softer Flexan insert used in the Drago and Furia). Overall fit is also improved by way of the lacing system. Here two ‘arms’ extend from the upper at the cuff, meaning the laces, when drawn in tight, give an unparalleled suction fit with no or minimal dead space. This can also be tweaked to vary fit depending on end use.
As with its close siblings, the Chimera utilises PCB-Tensioning, whereby a minimalist ‘Power Connection Band’ runs along the base of the sole allowing for excellent natural foot movement whilst holding the shape and form of the shoe when in use.
The upper consists of an eight panel microfibre/leather combination and ‘high rise’ big toe wrap with offset four toe support stitching for improved fit and comfort. This is part of a more wider reaching design brief; whereby no stitching lines within the shoe come in contact with high pressure points to further increase the overall feel and comfort.
The business end of the Chimera features a 3.5mm Vibram XS Grip2 two-piece sole unit and the SRT randing system, which wraps sticky rubber (not rand rubber!) around the whole toe box upper. This gives perhaps the best toe-hooking of any shoe on the market. Finally, the heel is sensitive, close fitting and deep, whilst maintaining enough substance to protect the foot on uneven hooks and cams.
In summary, the Scarpa Chimera is the ultimate shoe for steep, high performance bouldering and sport climbing.
