I have another pair of B2's from the Trango range and knew the fit was good (slightly narrow). Fit well and very light boots (used to climb in plastic Asolo's for those that remember!), but not as warm. Very stiff as expected, crampon fit was good, easy to lace and adjust, stayed dry all week with a gaiter over them. Just back from a weeks ice climbing in Rjukan in Jan and they performed well, just not as warm as other options. Would recommend and great value at R&R prices.

These are great boots. Grip on stone cracks etc is brilliant. Grip in loose snow is very good as well. If you have a good gaiter then there is no way your feet are going to get wet. Warm as well. Have tested in -20C and they were fine. Excellent crampon compatibility. I would recommend to pack light mountain boots and use these when you reach the serious terrain. They are not very comfortable for wearing during transit or to base camps as they were not designed for it!
I have wide feet and hence ordered 1 size bigger then my normal and luckily I made the right choice. I prefer these over the Scarpa B3 I tried before.

Try before you buy (if you can)

Time for some early reflections on the La Sportiva Trango Extreme. As a La S user of several years I have grown to value the quality and durability of the Nepal models I’ve previously used. That said, I had found the sizing of the Nepals to be ‘tight’ and I found myself with 2 pairs just half a size too small for long term comfort. Time for a change. Now, some retailers say La S sizing is accurate, others say go up. I am an absolutely bog standard 43. So, I bought 44.5 in the Trango Extreme (instead of 43 and 43.5 in the Nepal) and guess what, the length fit is perfect but the volume slightly large. And therein lay my first problem. On an extended second day of use (after a slightly uncomfortable 4 hour day before), I experienced real discomfort from the torsion bar on the outside of the left boot - it’s stitching coincided with the bony protrusion on my ankle. I then started to develop heel blisters. Nightmare. I tried several lacing options to relieve pressure and in the end used kinesio tape to protect my heels and outside of my ankle.
Overnight, I put in a second set of footbeds over the originals and next day, hey presto, volume issue solved and torsion bar rub much reduced. Still had blisters though!
The upsides to those boots? Over three days I used them on all mixed, winter terrains, from flat estate track, across peat hag, steep grassed slopes, steep rocky ground, snow and ice, and with crampons. On every surface and slope steepness they were faultless. I’d pre-fitted my crampons (Petzl) before leaving for the trip and when needed, they were on and securely fitted rapidly and felt great when descending very steep snow slopes. Kicking steps in snow without crampons and ‘edging’ across soft and hard snow slopes was also secure and ‘accurate’.
These will be my 4 season boots from now on, although I still have some volume ‘fettling’ to do and lacing options to try to ensure a comfortable long term future.
Feet/boot combinations are completely unique to each of us and what suits one person doesn’t another. So, best try before you buy (if you can).

Very comfortable and light for B3 boots. Very warm as well. I would recommend a size up if you have wide feet. Very little breaking in required. Have to play with laces to find optimal fit. But once accustomed to then very easy from there on.
Rock +Run was brilliant. Fantastic customer service.
